Dr Jayaram graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1988. She entered the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) training programme after completing her internship at Hornsby District Hospital.

She completed her training for general practice in 1996 and was awarded a fellowship in the RACGP.

She has worked as a general practitioner since 1996.
